This Psalm 62 reflection devotional evaluates the Davidic Psalm written by King David, dedicated to Jeduthun (or Ethan). It is the parallel to Psalm 39, the second Psalm dedicated to Jeduthun.
Psalm 62 Reflection Devotional
"Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. How long will you assault me? Would all of you throw me down--this leaning wall, this tottering fence? Surely they intend to topple me from my lofty place; they take delight in lies. With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse. Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken. My salvation and my honor depend on God; his is my mighty rock, my refuge. Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge" (Psalm 62:5-8)
The historical context concludes that the sons of Jeduthun were porters (doorkeepers), as stated in 1 Chronicles 16:42. David understood how music was to be organized. In order to be good at singing, it took service and practice. The sons of Jeduthun did this well. In versus 5-8, David is emphasizing the virtue, patience. He has already established it and is holding himself to the standard to continue it and remain unshaken by circumstances.
David understood that the human tendency is to venture from virtue and he is telling his soul to remain anchored in God for true hope comes from Him. Influences such as his enemies and his own nature were threatening to steal David's peace and his ability to remain anchored in versus 6-7. He was tempted to cave into self-preservation. He acknowledges that God alone is his provision of safety and he will remain unshaken through God’s strength.
The passage's voice allows the reader to see the back and forth debate David is having between his flesh and his spirit. He is telling himself to keep calm amidst the chaos and to remain unshaken. This flesh/spirit debate is definitely one that I can understand. Plenty of situations have been out of my control and my husband's control, (i.e. a bad living situation at a certain apartment complex). These situations forced us to wait on God's timing. And rest assured. God sees all motives as he searches the heart of every man and He will not forsake His people.
